Chevron Energy Solutions Announces Energy Savings Program at North Carolina Central University

DURHAM, N.C., May 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron Energy Solutions, a unit of Chevron Corporation

, announced an energy efficiency and solar program at North Carolina Central University, which is expected to save the university more than $10 million over the life of the project. The energy efficiency improvements combined with a 120 panel solar thermal array is expected to reduce the university's purchase of utility power and in turn, reduce carbon emissions by more than 5,000 tons, equivalent to planting and maintaining more than 900 acres of trees.

Charlie Nelms, chancellor of North Carolina Central University, said, 'This energy efficiency and solar program allows us to save money that can be put to good use underwriting programs that are central to our educational mission.'

Chevron Energy Solutions has designed and is implementing energy efficiency improvements at 10 buildings. These improvements included lighting upgrades, motor replacements, variable speed drives, new premium efficiency steam boilers and stack economizers, upgrades to the aging heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, water conservation upgrades, and a project-wide energy management control system. The company also designed and is constructing a solar thermal system. The cost of the project was funded utilizing Build America Bonds and other rebates.
