The ExxonMobil Foundation today announced grants for 2011 aimed at
making further advances to combat malaria and raise awareness of this
disease. The new grants will be highlighted at the opening of the
'Champions to End Malaria? photo exhibition at the United Nations
headquarters in New York City.
'Over the past decade, we have seen a 20 percent drop in the number of
deaths attributed to malaria,? said Suzanne McCarron, president of the
ExxonMobil Foundation. 'We are committed to continue doing our part to
fight this disease and believe these additional grants will save the
lives of even more people in the years to come.?
McCarron announced that ExxonMobil has awarded 24 projects grants
totaling $10 million for work in Africa and Asia. Since 2000, ExxonMobil
and the ExxonMobil Foundation have contributed more than $100 million to
the fight against malaria. This funding has helped with efforts to
distribute bed nets, develop anti-malaria medication and provide early
treatment and prevention programs, which have helped 40 million people,
mostly in Africa.
'ExxonMobil has been a leader in the fight against malaria,? said
Timothy E. Wirth, president, United Nations Foundation. 'Their
contribution is the perfect example of the power of partnerships that
connect not only resources, but also valuable business expertise in the
global fight.?
The 'Champions to End Malaria? exhibition, to be held April 25 through
May 22, is a joint project of ExxonMobil, the United Nations Foundation,
Roll Back Malaria and world renowned photographer Platon to highlight
the extraordinary efforts individuals have made against malaria. Platon
has captured the images of individuals from all walks of life who have
made an extraordinary difference in saving lives from malaria.
