Media Advisory - Anzac-Area Students receive 2013 nexen oil sands scholarship

09.05.2013  |  CNW
CALGARY, May 9, 2013 - Two students hailing from the Anzac area have been selected as the newest recipients of the Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship.

Blaise Barre, studying Natural Resource Compliance at Lethbridge College, and Andrew Cisna, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Alberta, have been awarded the 2013 scholarship, created to ensure youth in Anzac and the surrounding area can share in the success of Nexen's Long Lake in situ oil sands facility.

The Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship provides financial support to high school graduates pursuing post-secondary education and skills training through university degrees and college diplomas, certificate programs at vocational schools and apprenticeships.

"I have a passion for preserving our natural world. With my degree, I would like to pursue a career in Canadian parks," says Blaise.

"The Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship has given me the help I needed to start down a path to success."

"The Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship has helped me tremendously," Andrew adds. "It essentially pays for one semester each year, so I don't have to take out student loans. That's a really big weight off my shoulders."

There are no restrictions on the program of study or discipline supported by the Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship. The amount of the scholarship varies:

University/College/Vocational Schools/Technical Schools

  • $2,500 CAD per year for a degree, diploma or certificate program of study
  • Up to a maximum of four years or until the first degree/diploma is obtained, whichever occurs first
  • Up to a maximum of two years or until the first certificate is obtained, whichever occurs first

Apprenticeships
  • $750 CAD for each period of apprenticeship technical training (classroom studies) for a maximum of up to four years ($3,000 CAD) or until the apprenticeship program is completed, whichever occurs first

To be eligible for the Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship, applicants must be Canadian citizens, have graduated from high school at the time of the award, reside within Anzac or the surrounding area, and be entering full-time studies at a postsecondary institution or plan to begin an eligible apprenticeship technical training program within two years (full program details and eligibility are available at www.nexeninc.com)

A wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited, Nexen operates the Long Lake integrated steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and upgrading operation, located 40 km southeast of Fort McMurray, which began producing in 2008.
