CALGARY, June 20, 2013 /CNW/ - Recent heavy rains and spring run-off in southern Alberta caused a flooding of the Sheep River. As a precautionary measure, Legacy was in the process of shutting in production in the Turner Valley Field when a natural gas well, Royalite 19, located at 5-6-20-2W5M in the southwest corner of the town of Turner Valley, had a flow line rupture due to impacts from trees and other debris in the rising flood water. Legacy Turner Valley and head office staff are working with the Alberta Energy Regulator ("AER") and other local and government officials and Turner Valley emergency response personnel to ensure public safety.
Due to the rupture, a release of approximately 1% hydrogen sulphide ("H2S") natural gas has occurred, at a low rate of flow. Legacy has enacted its emergency response plan. There are no residents located within the well's emergency planning zone. Legacy has air quality monitoring on site and has not detected H2S that would exceed regulated levels for public health.
The Town of Turner Valley was already evacuating residents in the area of the leak in response to the flooding.As a precaution, Legacy worked with Turner Valley emergency services to evacuate additional residents in the area.
