28.06.2022 | 23:05 Uhr | Newsfile

Toronto, June 28, 2022 - Labrador Iron Mines Holdings Ltd. (OTC Pink: LBRMF) (the "Company") reports its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2022.

This News Release should be read in conjunction with the Company's audited consolidated financial statements and Management's Discussion and Analysis for the year ended March 31, 2022, which are available on the Company's website at www.labradorironmines.ca or under the Company's profile on SEDAR (www.sedar.com).

OVERVIEW

The Company, through its majority owned subsidiaries Labrador Iron Mines Limited ("LIM") and Schefferville Mines Inc. ("SMI"), is engaged in the exploration and development of iron ore projects situated in the Menihek area of western Newfoundland and Labrador and northeastern Quebec, near the town of Schefferville, in the central part of the Labrador Trough region of eastern Canada, one of the major iron ore producing regions in the world.

The Company's current focus is planning activities related to advancing the Houston Project, LIM's flagship property. The Houston Project is an open pit direct shipping iron ore project located near the town of Schefferville, on which an updated, independent Preliminary Economic Assessment was completed in February 2021 and demonstrated production of 2 million dmt of DSO per year, with an initial 12-year mine life, for total production of 23.4 million dmt of product at 62.2% Fe over the life of the mine.

The Houston Project offers low technical risk, with only building a short gravel road and rail siding as the principal construction components. The Houston Project's deposits 1 and 2 have undergone extensive regulatory review and approval and are considered ready for construction with a one-year construction period to production.

LIM is advancing development of the Houston Project through a number of initiatives, including: discussing an off-take agreement, including construction financing and product sale components with a potential off-take partner; advancing commercial negotiations with construction contractors, equipment vendors, rail, port and logistics counterparties; and planning metallurgical test work of drill core collected from the Houston Project in a 2013 bulk sample, to refine the product characterization and specifications which will be helpful in marketing the iron ore.

In order to fund these near term initiatives and provide ongoing working capital, the Company is working to complete a potential private placement financing of approximately $ 5.0 million.

HOUSTON PROJECT

The Houston Project is an open pit direct shipping iron ore project located near the town of Schefferville, on which an updated, independent Preliminary Economic Assessment ("PEA") was completed by Roscoe Postle Associates Inc. ("RPA"), now part of SLR Consulting Ltd., in February 2021 that demonstrated production of 2 million dmt of DSO per year, with an initial 12-year mine life, for total production of 23.4 million dmt of product at 62.2% Fe over the life of the mine.

Based on the assumptions used, the PEA estimates the Houston Project will generate an undiscounted net cash flow of $234 million and an after-tax net present value at an 8% discount rate ("NPV8%") of $109 million and an after-tax internal rate of return ("IRR") of 39%, under the base case US$90/dmt (62% Fe Sinter Fines CFR China basis) benchmark pricing model.

The PEA supports LIM's plan to resume iron ore production from its Stage 2 Houston Project with low re-start capital and robust economics at a time when the global iron ore markets are very strong. The PEA estimates initial direct capital costs of $51.3 million, and along with indirect costs, engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) costs, owner's costs and contingency, total initial capital expenditures of $86.8 million. The initial capital intensity at only US$33 per annual tonne of production is considered low by industry standards.

[Technical Report entitled: "NI 43-101 Technical Report Labrador Iron Mines Holdings Ltd. on The Preliminary Economic Assessment of The Houston Project, Provinces Of Newfoundland and Labrador and Québec, Canada, dated February 26, 2021, filed on SEDAR].

IRON ORE MARKET

The iron ore market was characterized by extreme volatility in the year ended March 31, 2022. While averaging US$143 per tonne (62% Fe Sinter Fines CFR China) for the full 12 months, the price fluctuated between a record high of US$235 in May 2021 to a low of US$87 in November, before recovering to US$150 by the end of March 2022.

The general market turnaround since November coincided with interest rate cuts in China designed to stimulate investment in the country's property and infrastructure sectors. More construction activity means higher steel output, which in turn raises iron ore demand. Additionally, in early February 2022, China announced 2030 as the new deadline for peak carbon emissions for the country's steel sector, against an earlier target of 2025, in a move that prioritizes economic growth by giving the steel industry five extra years to rein in its emissions.

Beginning in April 2022, the iron ore market has been negatively impacted by rolling Covid-related lockdowns in China, which has temporarily slowed industrial activity in the country, but has been positively impacted by the interruption in production and sales of iron ore from Ukraine as a result of the invasion by Russia. All factors considered, the price has remained very strong in relative historical terms, trading in the range of US$120 to US$150.

As for the second half of 2022, much will turn on how the Covid situation unfolds in China. Many analysts believe that once lockdowns are ended, pent-up demand could lead to a surge in industrial activity in that country, which combined with continued interruption in supply from Ukraine could lead to very healthy demand dynamics for the iron ore market.

FINANCIAL RESULTS - YEAR ENDED MARCH 31, 2022

On a consolidated basis, the Company reported a loss of $98,154, or $0.00 per share during the year ended March 31, 2022, compared to net income of $25,666,588, or $0.16 per share, during the previous year.

The loss of $98,154 in the current year was mainly attributable to site costs of $320,149, corporate and administrative costs of $482,738 and share-based compensation of $329,150, offset by a rehabilitation provision recovery of $1,032,567. Net income of $25,666,588 in the previous year was mainly attributable to an impairment reversal of $25,963,413, assignment of rights income of $750,000 and a rehabilitation provision recovery of $305,049, offset by site costs of $367,951, corporate and administrative costs of $303,999 and share-based compensation of $677,943.

Site costs included the expenditures required to maintain the Company's mineral properties in good standing. Share based compensation represents the expense of restricted share units recognized during the year using the graded vesting method of expense recognition. Rehabilitation provision recovery represents the difference between the actual rehabilitation expenditures incurred during the year and the previously estimated costs that formed the basis of the rehabilitation liability discharged.

The impairment reversal in the previous year represents the full recovery of the carrying value of the Houston Project which had previously been impaired. Assignment of rights income in the previous year represents the income recognized by the Company for the assignment of certain rights in a rail siding to a third party.

At March 31, 2022 the Company had current assets of $333,087, consisting of $309,205 in cash and $23,882 in refundable taxes and prepaid expenses. The Company had no long term debt, other than a $40,000 loan under the Covid-related Canada Emergency Business Account program.
